What began in 1995 as a creative way to bring more energy and visitors to Downtown Port Clinton has grown into a vibrant tradition of celebration, community, and giving back. It all started when a local resident built a paper-mâché walleye named Wylie to mark the New Year in a uniquely Port Clinton way.
Today, over two decades later, our signature New Year’s Eve Walleye Drop remains a must-see spectacle. Thousands gather annually—braving the winter cold—to watch Wylie Jr., a dazzling 20-foot, 600-pound LED-lit walleye, descend from the sky at midnight, followed by a stunning fireworks display. As the self-proclaimed “Walleye Capital of the World,” we couldn’t imagine a better way to ring in the new year!
But we’re more than just one night a year.
Our organization is proud to host a growing lineup of exciting, inclusive events that drive community engagement, tourism, and fun year-round. One of our favorites is the Annual Bar Swim, introduced in 2019—a peninsula-wide, heated-bus bar loop that promotes safe and responsible celebration under our “Don’t Drink and Drive” initiative. With Wi-Fi, power outlets, restrooms, and warm interiors, the buses ensure everyone enjoys the night responsibly and returns safely to Downtown Port Clinton.
At the heart of all we do is a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents and supporting local initiatives. That’s why we’ve launched community grant programs to give back to the very people who make our town so special. From supporting local nonprofits and beautification projects to funding small business initiatives, we believe in reinvesting event success directly into our hometown.
We’re honored to have gained statewide recognition for our efforts, with past events featured alongside national celebrations, including a split-screen simulcast with the Times Square Ball Drop. Our success is made possible thanks to the collaboration of local businesses, volunteers, sponsors, and partners like Lake Erie Shores & Islands, FOX 36 Toledo, WPCR Radio, and The Beacon.
We invite you to be part of our growing tradition—whether by attending an event, becoming a sponsor, volunteering your time, or applying for a community grant. Together, we’re not just celebrating—we’re building a better Port Clinton, one event at a time.
